"We southerners are really suffering, during the war and up to now," says Agnes Odwar, a Sudanese graduate of a Catholic Relief Services peacebuilding and leadership training program. "We're now learning how to bring peace to our people, families and communities."
The People-to-People Peace program is helping to strengthen community bonds and increase people's ability to peacefully resolve conflicts over the long term. Activities include civic education, peacebuilding and leadership workshops, and close collaboration with local peace groups and the South Sudan Peace Commission.
Although a Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed between North and South Sudan in 2005, local conflicts such as cattle raids and tension over sharing scarce resources remain common.
